Scam Alert

GWINNETT COUNTY – A scam alert from Gwnnett County. The sheriff’s office says they’ve received dozens of reports of folks getting calls from people claiming to be deputies collecting fines.

The callers are said to have detailed knowledge of the sheriff’s office and are especially persuasive.

The AJC reports at least four victims made payments as high as $900. They’d been told the money would void an arrest warrant issued because they failed to appear for jury service.

If you have gotten a call that sounds like this scam, you’re asked to contact the Gwinnett Sheriff’s Office at 770-619-6655.

Atheist Group Threatens Suit

GAINESVILLE – An atheist group is threatening a lawsuit against a Hall County High School. Access North Georgia is reporting that superintendent Will Schofield received a letter from a lawyer representing the American Humanist Association.

It says a concerned citizen claims football coaches at Chestatee High School have been using their position to promote Christianity on the football team by integrating Bible verses into team documents and team promotions.

The letter asks the school system to respond with detailed information on how they’ll comply with the demand within two weeks or face a lawsuit.

A spokesman for Hall County schools says they’re conducting an investigation and will respond shortly.
